6th Annual “Support Our Veterans Silent Auction”
Benefits Hospitalized Veterans at Lebanon VA Medical Centerauctionlogo

Freedom is never free.  It is paid for by the sacrifices of our Veterans and their families.  Their dedication to the security of our nation, like that of earlier generations, is what makes America truly the land of the free.

As our WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans age, America’s newest combat veterans are returning home in record numbers.  Facing devastating injuries and emotional trauma from serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of these veterans are confined to extended health care where loneliness is a way of life.  Too often hospitalized veterans are hundreds of miles away from their families and friends.  To help make life a little more pleasant for these brave men and women, Hornungs Ace Hardware of Harrisburg is sponsoring the 6th Annual “Support Our Veterans Silent Auction” to benefit hospitalized veterans at the VA Medical Center located in Lebanon, PA.

The auction takes place during the Harrisburg Senators home baseball game on Friday, August 28 at Metro Bank Park.  All military personnel, including servicemen and civilians, will get a $2.00 discount off the regular ticket price when presenting their Military IDs at the Senators Box Office.  Bids will be accepted during the game through the seventh inning.  Top bidders can retrieve their items following the bottom of the seventh inning.  (Please read below for the most up-to-date list of auction items.)

All the money raised from this auction will be used to provide comfort items (i.e. toothbrushes, denture powder and brushes, combs, shaving cream, etc.) and services (televisions, wheelchairs, and recreation programs) to enhance the stay of hospitalized veterans.  The federal government does not provide “comfort items and services”.

According to Chief of Voluntary Service Scott Harman, “Your donation will help raise funds that will allow us to provide extra amenities to the veterans that might otherwise not be available. They will be used towards providing regular and special activities (i.e. tickets and transportation to baseball games) and get-togethers for inpatients, as well as providing refreshments and kind words from volunteers serving outpatients at our Hospitality Bar.”

“Our veterans need to know that they are not forgotten,” said Bill Hornung.  “It is important to recognize these heroes and to thank them for the sacrifices they have made on behalf of us all.”

“Early bird” bids can be placed on this website until 12 pm, Friday, August 28, 2009.  Bids will be updated Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
